Trex
Artisan Railing™ Installation Guide
Step
1 - Install Posts
The maximum post span for the Trex Artisan Series Railing
is 96" on center. Attach the 4x4 pressure treated
post to the rim joists and wood support blocking with
two-1/2" diameter carriage
bolts. Do not notch posts. Bolts must be vertically spaced
no less than 5 1/8" apart.
Top bolt must be at least 2" from the top of the
deck. The bottom bolt must be at least 1" from the
bottom of the post.
Step 2 - Post Skirts (when applicable)
Break the screw tabs (4) off of one post skirt per post.
Slide skirt over post, and rest on the deck surface. (Illustration

Step
3 - Post Sleeves
Slide 4x4 or 6x6 post sleeve over 4x4
wood post. The post sleeve should rest on the deck surface
inside the post skirt. (Illustration B)
Step
4 - Set Railing Support Brackets (RSB)
Insert two RSB's into the TrexExpress™ Artisan Railing
Assembly Tool. Wrap the tool around the post, resting
the bottom of the tool on the top of the Post Skirt. Attach
each RSB to the post using (2) screws provided (two-1/2"
drive screws). (Illustration C)
Step
5 - Attach Bottom Rail
Attach bottom rail to posts with the screws provided:
(2) 1 1/2" - #12 self-drilling
screws. Place the rail gaskets on the end of the rails
prior to fastening. After the rail is secure, place the
white rubber screw protectors over the screw points. (Illustration

Step
6 - Support Blocks
Cut 4" support blocks from a full size baluster.
Cut slowly to avoid chipping. Apply a bead of construction
adhesive to top of block. Carefully position the support
blocks under the bottom rail at 18" intervals.
Step
7 - Space Your Balusters
Cut balusters spacers to the same length as the rails.
(Cut baluster spacers slowly to avoid chipping.) Snap
one baluster spacer into the bottom rail. Place the 2nd
baluster spacer on top of the first upside down with the
snaps facing up. Be sure the holes are lined up. (Illustration

Step
8 - Securing Balusters to Bottom Rail
Put the balusters into the spacer holes. Balusters are
precut to correct length in kit.
Step
9 - Securing Balusters to Handrail
Attach the top rail to posts:
a. Raise the top baluster spacer up halfway
to stabilize the balusters. (Illustration G)
b. Put the top rail on the brackets,
positioning the balusters in the channel.
c. After the rail and balusters are in
place, push the top spacer back down.
d. Place the rail gaskets on the ends
of the rail prior to fastening. Fasten the top rail to
the post with the #12 - 1 1/2"
self-drilling screws. To allow room for drill, push balusters
away from the post that you are attaching to the rail.
(Illustration H)
e. Raise the top baluster spacer again
and snap into top rail.
Step 10 - Finishing Up
Mount the 2nd post skirt to top of the post with the (4)
1 5/8" bugle head screws. Snap
the post cap onto the post skirt. (Illustration I)
