Handling
and Cutting
Iron Woods™
are supplied as partially air dried lumber and are
for outdoor use only.
- Store
out of direct sunlight and allow the wood to acclimate
and stabilize to installation area temperature and
humidity before installing.
- Ventilation
of the deck is essential for long-term stability.
Proper air circulation allows air to flow in from
outside the deck area, under the joists and up through
the gaps between the deck boards.
- Allow
a 1/8” gap between deck boards for drainage
and airflow. In well-ventilated decks built high
off the ground in hot/dry climates a 1/16”
gap may be used.
- Decking
may shrink approximately 1/16” on 4”
wide and 1/8” on 6” wide decking. In
hot or dry areas you may experience additional shrinkage.
Tools
Carbide tipped saw blades and high quality drills
are recommended for smooth cuts.
Stainless Fasteners
Recommended is stainless steel screws through the
face of every board or hidden fasteners for a blemish
free deck surface. One of the best stainless steel
screws to use is the Headcote brand which
has a color coated head to match the Ipe. They are
available with flat or trim heads, from Tarheel Wood
Treating.
Note: Non-stainless steel fasteners will cause
discoloration near the fastener.
Hidden Fasteners
Hidden fasteners are the preferred method of installation
for the beauty of a smooth blemish-free surface. Recommended
for 1x6 boards is DeckMaster
hidden fasteners. For 5/4 x 6's, you may use DeckMaster.
