Miratec® Treated Exterior Composite Trim

Azek logo

Tarheel Wood Treating offers MiraTEC® Treated Exterior Composite Trim ... it looks just like real wood ... only better. Combining beauty with the best in technology and performance, MiraTEC Trim helps you achieve a distinctive look for the long term.

MiraTEC Trim provides the perfect accent to any exterior cladding – cement fiber, vinyl, brick, OSB, hardboard, wood or stucco. You have the option of a smooth side and a textured side for maximum versatility.
It’s also factory primed with a mildew-resistant primer on all four sides for easy painting.

MiraTEC Trim will not delaminate as it is not hardboard, and is moisture, rot and termite resistant, because it is treated with zinc borate. MiraTEC Trim excels in all four seasons. Because MiraTEC Trim is specially treated, it’s more cost-effective over time than redwood, cedar, fir or poplar, MiraTEC lasts longer and holds paint better.

Product Quality
Thanks to CMI's patented TEC manufacturing process, MiraTEC Trim is uniformly thick and dense, with no voids or knots. Any way you use it, MiraTEC Trim provides maximum yield, eliminates waste, and offers a plentiful product supply and stable pricing. And MiraTEC is backed by a 30-year limited warranty.

MiraTEC Advantages

1. MiraTEC is better than wood because it is an engineered product that offers performance that wood can't. MiraTEC resists warping, cupping, and splitting. It is treated to resist moisture, rot and termites. It comes with a factory-applied mildew-resistant primer, saving time and labor. MiraTEC has a 30 year warranty and offers stable availability, quality, and full yields, unlike wood.

2. MiraTEC is better than hardboard trim because MiraTEC is made of one solid piece through a patented process designed specifically to make trim. Hardboard trim is made from two pieces of hardboard siding that are glued together. These trim products may delaminate or split. MiraTEC is one piece, solid through and through.

3. MiraTEC is better than OSB trim because MiraTEC has a more authentic cedar texture than OSB; MiraTEC is reversible (meaning less inventory to carry) and MiraTEC can be machined for use as a variety of decorative accessories. OSB offers none of these benefits.

4. MiraTEC is better than PVC trim because MiraTEC offers a more realistic cedar texture, does not have issues with thermal expansion, and MiraTEC costs half as much as most PVC trim, while offering many of the same performance benefits. Also:

  • MiraTEC has the largest product offering available on the market today, with widths ranging from 2" to 16".
  • MiraTEC has a 30-year warranty.
  • The MiraTEC warranty covers rot, hail damage and warp.
  • No other engineered wood trim covers this.

5. Unlike MiraTEC Trim, wood trim has knots and imperfections, does not generate 100% yields, is not available with a warranty and is typically not sold with a factory-applied primer.

Most composite trim products available on the market today are composed of hardboard. These products are made from two (2) pieces of hardboard siding laminated together. Unlike MiraTEC Trim, these products are prone to delamination and are not as durable as MiraTEC. Most of these products have less warranty protection than MiraTEC.

How MiraTEC is made
MiraTEC is a treated wood composite trim made using the TEC™ sealed-press manufacturing process. This process was designed specifically for MiraTEC trim.

In this patented process, wood fiber, phenolic resins, zinc borate (a wood preservative), a water repellent and other ingredients are combined and formed into a thick fiber mat. This mat is loaded into a sealed cavity. Steam is introduced during the pressing process to facilitate uniform heat transfer throughout the mat, resulting in a board that has exceptionally consistent physical properties.

Critical factors can be set during this process to produce a firm surface for superb paint holdout and performance. The wood preservative and phenolic resin provide moisture, rot and termite resistance, and further enhance long-term performance. MiraTEC is also termite resistant. Due to this unique technology, MiraTEC is backed by a 30-year warranty.

Fasteners
Use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel nails with a 3/16" head diameter, long enough to penetrate 1-1/4" into structural framing members.

Power nailing systems are allowed when the fasteners are equal in performance (such as nail withdrawal, bending strength and corrosion resistance) to the standard galvanized nails with 3/16" head diameter, and long enough to penetrate 1-1/4" into structural framing members.

Any other fasteners used, such as screws or ring-shank nails, must meet the same criteria. Tapered or bugle head fasteners are permitted when the heads are properly sealed from moisture with an exterior grade spackling putty specifically designed for filling nail holes. Do not use staples or t-nails. Use of these fasteners will void the warranty.

Painting
MiraTEC Trim is factory primed and does not need to be re-primed. However, if the primer has been badly scuffed or scraped during transit or handling, you can re-prime it.

For best results, use a high quality oil-based primer designed for use on wood. Paint MiraTEC Trim with two coats of high-quality exterior oil or latex paint designed for use on wood. If you have re-primed it, make sure the topcoat is compatible with the primer. Use a brush for best results. Priming and painting the edges is necessary only is exposed to the weather.

Installation Tips
MiraTEC Trim can be mitered for joints or column posts. Nails should be positioned no closer than 1/2" from the edge. If desired, MiraTEC can also be glued. We recommend a polyurethane-based adhesive.
