About
The Osmose
NatureWood Preserved Wood Product
NatureWood
preserved wood products offer termite and fungal decay protection
similar to that of CCA treated wood. Ground contact testing
of treated stakes confirms that while untreated SYP stakes
fail in less than 5 years, stakes preserved with NatureWood
preservatives perform similarly to CCA treated stakes.
Osmose
NatureWood Preservative
The
NatureWood® wood preservative
is a waterborne, alkaline copper quaternary preservative
system developed to provide long-term protection of wood
exposed in exterior applications.
The
NatureWood system is based on the well-established effectiveness
of copper combined with an organic quaternary compound and
is applied to wood by pressure treatment. Copper and quaternary
compounds are effective fungicides and termiticides. Together
they provide protection from a broad spectrum of fungi and
termites. Quaternary compounds are commonly used as swimming
pool additives, disinfectants and sanitizers and have antibacterial
properties. The active ingredients, copper oxide and quaternary
compounds, are dissolved in an alkaline carrier in NatureWood
products.
Depending on
the desired product application, wood species, and exposure
hazard, the NatureWood preservative system may be formulated
with a number of specialty additives such as water repellents
to enhance product performance.
Lifetime
Residential and Agricultural Limited Warranty
A Lifetime Residential and Agricultural Limited Warranty
is offered on NatureWood products at 0.15, 0.25 and 0.40
pcf retention levels for material used in residential and
agricultural applications. See Warranty for specific provisions.
An independent third-party quality control is required for
the use of the NatureWood trademark and NatureWood Lifetime
Residential and Agricultural Limited Warranty.

General
Building Tips
When building outdoors with preserved wood, it's important
to follow special construction practices, precautions, and
maintenance procedures in order to get the most out of your
finished product and protect it for years to come.
Most important,
the project must be built safely and in accordance with
state and local building codes. Before beginning your outdoor
construction project using pressure treated wood, please
make sure to review all building tips, consumer information,
handling precautions, and care and maintenance recommendations.
When you choose
pressure treated wood for your outdoor construction project,
you'll want to be sure to follow quality craftsman guidelines
for an excellent finished appearance and durability. Follow
these helpful tips to make your project easier to build,
last longer and look attractive.
When
Appearance Permits, Nail Bark Side Up
As a general rule, nail boards bark side up (annual rings
arc upwards) to reduce cupping. If a defect in the wood
is noticeable, however, the best face should be placed up.
Fasten thin boards to thicker boards to maintain structural
integrity.
Drill
Pilot Holes
To help minimize splitting of the wood, it's a good idea
to drill pilot holes for your fasteners, especially when
nailing near the edge or end of a board.
Deck
Board Spacing
If the wood has been kiln dried or air dried after treatment
(indicated by the word "Dry" on the end tag or
stamp), it is not necessary to allow for shrinkage. However,
if the wood has not been dried following treatment, some
shrinkage can be expected. To allow for this, make sure
to butt decking boards together.
Use
an End Cut Preservative
Brush a wood preservative on all saw cuts and into drill
holes during construction of wood projects. This is also
recommended for any areas where moisture can collect.
After
Care
There are many top quality maintenance products for your
outdoor wood projects, including water repellents, stains,
and cleaners. The finished product must be protected from
moisture and sun damage. See Tarheel Wood Treatings' full
line of Wolman wood care products and Penofin PTL penetrating
oil finish.
